Project description
Tiny House explores the dialogue between openings and space through a layered tropical design approach within a dense urban setting. Instead of relying on large outward-facing openings, the house uses semi-open thresholds, filtered openings, and transitional spaces to create a strong relationship between the interiors and the surrounding environment. The entry courtyard becomes the first spatial experience of the home, introducing light, ventilation, and greenery while creating a gradual transition from the busy exterior to the calm interiors. Inspired by Kerala’s tropical architectural language, perforated brick jali walls filter sunlight into soft patterns, encourage continuous cross ventilation, and maintain privacy within the dense neighbourhood. Double-height volumes and carefully positioned openings enhance openness while preserving comfort and enclosure. Openings are designed not only as functional elements, but also as devices that shape atmosphere, movement, shadow, and visual connectivity. Passive climatic strategies improve airflow and thermal comfort, reducing dependence on artificial cooling and lighting. Natural materials such as exposed brick, wood, stone, and seamless micro-topping create a durable, low-maintenance, and timeless environment. TOSTEM systems were chosen for their slim aluminium profiles, durability, and refined minimal aesthetic that complement the architectural language of Tiny House. Their expansive glazing allows daylight and ventilation to penetrate deep into the interiors while maintaining visual continuity between spaces. The weather resistance, precision detailing, and performance of the systems make them highly suitable for Kerala’s tropical climate and support the project’s intention of creating a seamless relationship between openings and space.
Sustainability is integrated through passive design strategies. The inward courtyard improves thermal comfort and airflow, reducing dependence on artificial cooling and lighting, while the durable material palette supports long-term efficiency.
TOSTEM products were chosen to strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Their slim aluminium profiles and expansive glazing allow natural light to flow deeply into the interiors while maintaining uninterrupted views of the courtyard. Their refined minimal aesthetic, durability, and weather resistance complement the calm architectural language of Tiny House perfectly.
Project concept
The design reflects Kerala’s tropical lifestyle and deep cultural relationship with nature. Perforated brick jaali walls filter sunlight into soft patterns, allow cross ventilation, and provide privacy from the surrounding neighbourhood. Double-height volumes and a mezzanine introduce a sense of openness, while gradual spatial transitions create a slow and contemplative living experience. Natural materials such as exposed brick, wood, stone, and seamless micro-topping reinforce warmth, simplicity, and continuity throughout the home.
